I’ma really need for politicians to stop pandering to the “middle class” just because they don’t technically exist in the numbers that we imagine, and the poor and working classes only ever get mentioned in ways that are either exploitative, derogatory or condescending. 

This. I think more of the ‘middle class’ is more working class than they realize, and a lot of rather wealthy people also consider themselves to be in the same class? But it’s really convenient to say you speak/have the best intentions for a large, vaguely defined group of people.

There’s this weird idea that only the middle classes can be fucked over by the system; the working class & poor, according to this line of thought, are poor by their own fault.
